A seven-year-old boy has demanded answers from London mayor Sadiq Khan of how many children died in the Grenfell Tower fire.

Kai Ramos, sitting on the shoulders of his mother, Jade, challenged the mayor as he visited the scene in the aftermath on Thursday, asking: “How many children died? What are you going to do about it?”

Tempers flared as Mr Khan was greeted by angry crowds outside the nearby Notting Hill Methodist Church during his speech to camera, with many saying they had been “let down” after the devastating blaze left at least 17 people dead.

“There’s too much emphasis on Brexit mate! Look after the country,” one man shouted.

“Look after the people!” another woman said.

As Mr Khan walked through the crowds he was confronted by the young boy, to which he replied: “The bad news, I’m afraid, is lots of people died in the fire.”

“They are going through the building now, that’s why it takes time you see. I know it’s very sad because you might have a friend in there.”

Kai repeated: “What are you going to do about it? What are you going to do with people’s lives? They’ve lost their homes.”

“We need to make sure they have somewhere to live but we’re going to do that,” Mr Khan said.

“I know it’s upsetting and I know you’re angry but we’ll get those answers.”

Despite the angst towards the London mayor, he told reporters he shared their anger.

“Understandably the residents are angry and concerned and have genuine questions that demand answers,” he said.

“I grew up in a similar council estate in South London and this could have easily been my family, my friends, and my community.”
