Relatives of MH370 passengers say they have found a possible piece of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane on an island off the east coast of Madagascar.

The piece was found by Chinese man Jiang Hui, who lost his mother on the doomed flight in 2014.

The group Voice370, which represents the association for families of passengers and crew, tweeted the item was found on Riake Beach, Isle St Marie, and was the first piece found by next-of-kin.

“Mixed feelings for all of us,” they wrote.

Mr Jiang travelled to Madagascar along with seven other relatives of the victims who became disillusioned with the Malaysian government’s handling of the investigation.

The Guardian reported Mr Jiang spoke to media in the city of Antananarivo, pleading for more help to locate pieces of the missing aircraft.

The piece of debris has been handed over to the Malaysian investigation, although it is thought to be unlikely it will be confirmed as belonging to MH370.

Malaysian flight MH370 went down somewhere over the South China Sea while on its way to Beijing in March 2014.

A wing flaperon washed up on Réunion island in the Indian Ocean in 2015, while a number of pieces have been found on the east and south coasts of Africa.
