The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC) says waves of between one and three metres are possible following this morning’s shallow magnitidue-7.0 quake.
The quake follows yesterdays more powerful 7-8 quake which damaged at least 30 buildings and forced some locals to scramble to higher ground.
Tsunami waves of less than 0.3 metres above the tide level are also forecast for Australia, Fiji, Kiriati, Nauru, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Yesterday’s shake was downgraded by the USGS from an initial estimate of 8. It struck 70km off Kirakira in the Solomon Islands at around 4.30am, at a depth of 48.7km.
Two aftershocks of above magnitude 5 were also felt.
The centre called on government emergency services to “take action to inform and instruct any coastal populations at risk in accordance with their own evaluation.”
