Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has released a powerful new attack ad that takes aim at the sexist comments of her Republican rival Donald Trump.

The ads feature some of Mr Trump’s most controversial statements about women, coupled with footage of young women staring at their own reflection, concluding with the question: “Is this the president we want for our daughters?”

The ad has been viewed on YouTube more than four million times since it was posted on Mrs Clinton’s official YouTube page over the weekend.

In ‘Mirrors’, young women look into the mirror sombrely as a ‘best of’ reel of Trump’s most politically incorrect comments are played.

These include Mr Trump suggesting that “flat-chested” women were unlikely to rate a 10/10, and comments about Rosie O’Donnell being a “pig” with a “fat ass”.

Another ad in the series looks at the influence of Mr Trump’s words on children, juxtaposing the Republican’s hyperbole with images of young, impressionable kids.

The ad comes as a Washington Post-ABC News poll  places Mrs Clinton and Mr Trump in a “virtual dead heat” ahead of their Monday night (US time) debate.

When asked “If the presidential election were being held today … for whom would you vote?” and given a choice of all candidates, Mrs Clinton came in with a count of 46 per cent, just 2 per cent above Mr Trump’s 44 per cent.

When those likely voters were given the choice between only Mrs Clinton or Mr Trump, the difference remained the same, with 49 per cent likely to vote for Mrs Clinton and 47 per cent for Mr Trump.

The pair are set to go head-to-head in the first presidential debate of the campaign from 11am on Tuesday morning (AEST).
