A new batch of leaked emails reveals comments from the former US secretary of state, Colin Powell, accusing Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton of hubris and labelling Donald Trump a “national disgrace”.

In the emails, Mr Powell says he warned Mrs Clinton’s staff not to try to pull him into the scandal involving her use of a private email server when she was secretary of state.

Mrs Clinton has compared her use of a private email server with his use of private email and said he advised her on the matter.

Mr Powell says he used private email, but not a private server, and did not advise her on the matter until months after her server was already in place and that everything that she touches she “screws up with hubris”.

In leaked emails posted on website DC Leaks, Mr Powell also blasted Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump as “a national disgrace and an international pariah,” a stinging attack on the brash billionaire from a cabinet member in the last Republican administration.

“He appeals to the worst angels of the GOP nature and poor white folks,” the retired four-star general, who twice endorsed the Democrat Barack Obama for president, wrote in a separate email.

Mr Powell, who was US secretary of state from 2001 to 2005, confirmed to NBC the hacked messages were authentic.
