Men in Iran have taken to wearing hijabs to show support for their partners, sisters and wives.

Images of men wearing hijabs have popped up on the My Stealthy Freedom campaign Facebook page run by a New York-based Iranian activist, Masih Alinejad, as well as private Instagram profiles.

The men often pose with their female partners and family who are without a head covering.

By not wearing the hijab, Iranian women are told they are putting themselves at risk of unwanted sexual advances, while state-funded advertising portrays women showing their hair as dishonourable.

Ms Alinejad told the United Kingdom’s Independent: “Most of these men are living inside Iran and they have witnessed how their female relatives have been suffering at the hands of the morality police and humiliation of enforced hijab.”

“For years, from childhood to womanhood, we’ve been forced to wear the compulsory headscarf and for years we have had to endure the loss of our dignity.”

Ms Alinejad said for millions of Iranian women, the hijab was an insult to their dignity.

The wearing of a headscarf is strictly enforced by Iran’s bizarrely named “morality police” since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Women who do not wear a hijab, or who wear hijabs that still show some of their hair, face punishments ranging from fines to imprisonment.
