According to Metro in the UK, the girl’s father had lifted her on to his shoulders to pose for a picture when she was hit.

She was reportedly outside the enclosure at the time.

The tragedy was the first of its kind since the zoo opened in 2012.

A bystander shot footage of the rock and of the girl being tended to after she was knocked unconscious.

A zoo spokesperson expressed condolences to the family, and added that the girl had not breached security, and nor had she entered the protective area outside the enclosure.

“Accidents of this type are rare, unforeseeable and unusual,” they said in a statement.
