With a late-night act of spontaneous generosity, a “simple guy” from Perth has earned universal praise and helped a homeless woman fly home to reconcile with her family in New Zealand.

A rough sleeper, named only as Jess, happened to be speaking with Siham Carollisen (who helps feed and clothe the homeless) when Daniel Roose passed by on a night out.

“As we sat we were approached by a man,” Ms Carollisen recounted in a post to her Facebook group, Brothers & Sisters Perth.

“At first taken aback by his direct approach, he asked why she was there, why we were with her and what we get out of it,” she said.

“He listened, and without another word, held out his hand and said ‘Come with me I’ll sort you out’.”

Mr Roose then led Jess to a nearby ATM and withdrew a wad of $50 notes, handing them to her and saying, “Jess, go home”.

The father of three told Perth Now Jess was just one of many who needed help.

“I saw a poor little girl fighting so much in her life at such a young age,” he said.

“Everyone has bad demons or bad experiences in life and people just judge and look from afar, they never really try to get to know the person.”

Ms Carollisen told Mr Roose, who works in mining management, the world needs more people like him.

“You’re a legend, you’re an absolute legend mate,” she told him.

He insisted, however, that he was “just a simple person”.

On the evening of Mr Roose’s good deed, Jess and her partner had split up to beg on opposite sides of the Perth CBD.

In her Facebook post, Ms Carollisen said she had happened upon Jess before in the suburbs, and she was surprised to see her in the area, dangerous for rough sleepers.

“She was out in the streets of Perth, begging in the hopes of raising money,” Ms Carollisen wrote.

“If not for a place to live, then for a ticket home.

“You see, because she isn’t a resident of this beautiful country, she doesn’t qualify for any income support.

“Her partner was on the other side of the city doing exactly what she was.”

Ms Carollisen’s group Brothers and Sisters Perth collects and distributes donations for the city’s homeless population.

Mr Roose said he didn’t know whether Jess would spend the money on a plane ticket.

“There are a lot of good things and bad things being said but I don’t really care,” he told Perth Now.

“It is for her, what she gets out of it. But getting her home could kick start her life.”
