Suffering multiple fractures and burns to 50 per cent of his body, a Melbourne motorcyclist has died almost a day after being hit by a stolen BMW in a fiery hit-and-run.

The 33-year-old sheet metal worker from Mitcham was dragged 85 metres along a street in his home suburb after the four-wheel drive sped through an intersection on Wednesday afternoon.

The tradie died in hospital on Thursday afternoon as police hunted four young men who were in the BMW and fled the crash scene.

“(The accident) pushed the motorcycle approximately 85 metres up the road. That friction has caused the motorcycle to catch fire,” Detective Inspector Stuart McGregor told reporters on Thursday.

“This is a person who’s just riding his motorcycle, going home.

“How astounding, how deflated, how desperately sad the family must be right now, I can’t bear to imagine.”

Inspector McGregor said the young men dumped the BMW in a freeway emergency exit lane at Scoresby before invading a nearby home while the occupants were gardening.

They stole the family’s’ car, which was later found burnt out at Narre Warren.

“The fact is that you are going to have to face justice. The fact is we are going to arrest you. You may as well do the right thing now and just come in,” the detective said in a message to the perpetrators.

Wednesday’s hit-and-run is one of two in Melbourne since Sunday.

The first crash at Coburg left a 13-year-old girl in hospital suffering critical injuries after she was hit by a car while riding her bike.

A 41-year-old Sunshine North woman has since been charged with multiple offences including dangerous driving and failing to stop.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews reminded Victorians of their obligations if involved in an accident.

“It’s just non-negotiable, if you’re involved in one of those terrible accidents then you need to render whatever assistance you can. It’s cowardly, it’s shameful not to,” he said.
