The family of a four-year-old boy who was killed after being hit by a car in a medical centre car park while walking hand-in-hand with his father has thanked the community for their love and support.

Brax Aidan Kyle was hit by a four-wheel drive which careered over a median strip into the car park of the Epworth Medical Centre, in Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs, about midday on Friday, police said.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the incident.

Brax’s family issued a short statement through Victoria Police on Saturday.

“Our darling Brax was tragically killed in a car accident yesterday,” they said.

“A private ceremony with intimate family is planned.

“Our family thank the community, extended family and friends for respecting our privacy and for all your love and support.”

A crowd funding campaign has been set up to raise money for the boy’s parents and brother.

Speaking on Friday, Detective Sergeant Mark Amos said the four-wheel drive was travelling along Kangan Drive and failed to take a left-hand bend.

Detective Sergeant Amos said Brax had been with both of his parents in a waiting room, before he and his father stepped out into the car park.

“The father’s gone out with his son, holding his hand, doing what good dads do and this outcome’s come up on them very, very suddenly,” he said.

“This has just come clean out of the sky, there was no way you could have predicted this could have happened.

“These [parents] are really traumatised. It is the most horrible, horrible thing you could imagine,” he said.

He said staff at the medical centre performed CPR but were unable to revive Brax.

The four-wheel drive ended up on its side and the driver was helped out.

The driver, a 56-year-old man from Packenham, spoke with police and was taken to Dandenong Hospital.

He remains in hospital and is continuing to help police with the investigation.

A man and a woman, not connected with the boy, were also hit but did not receive life-threatening injuries.
