Victoria Police are yet to identify a body found decomposed in bushland north-west of Melbourne, about 30 kilometres from where a search was conducted for missing mother Karen Ristevski.

Officers were called to Macedon Regional Park at 12:30pm on Monday afternoon after a bushwalker found a body off a dirt road near Macedon.

State Emergency Service crews arrived late in the evening to provide lighting and support to police and members of the Homicide Squad as they scoured the bushland for clues.

Police said they had no information about the identity of the body and the remains were taken away for forensic testing.

Locals said they regularly walked through the bushland but it was an otherwise quiet area.

The remains were found a few hundred metres from homes.

The site is about 30 kilometres from the area where police conducted an extensive search in December for Ms Ristevski.

Ms Ristevski, 47, was last seen at her home on Oakley Drive in June and has not used her mobile phone or bank accounts, or made contact with friends or family since that time.

But police are not expected to reveal any details until forensic has been completed.

“Obviously you fear the worst but we will just have to wait and see if it’s her,” nephew Chris Ristevski told News Corp on Monday night.

“It would be a bit surprising because the police told us they were searching in the Diggers Rest area.”
