A 24-year-old man has been shot dead by police during a Saturday night confrontation at a motel in Adelaide’s inner south-east.

The man was wanted over a hit-and-run on Friday night at Mitchell Park where a van swerved and knocked a police officer to the ground as he attempted to pull the vehicle over.

Police investigating the hit and run attended a Glen Osmond motel on Mount Barker Road about 7:00pm to make enquiries.

A man who was wanted over a hit and run involving a police officer had a gun and was threatening a woman in a motel room in Adelaide’s inner south-east when he was shot dead by police.

The hit-and-run incident occurred on Friday night at Mitchell Park where a van swerved and knocked a police officer to the ground when the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over.

Police investigating the incident attended a Glen Osmond motel on Mount Barker Road on Saturday about 7:00pm to make enquiries.

Deputy Commissioner Linda Williams said when police arrived they found the man, 24, in the room with a gun and a 21-year-old woman.

“STAR Group officers were called and the area was cordoned, and the incident was declared high risk,” she said.

“Negotiations commenced with the man, who ignored requests to come out. Shots were heard from the room and a short time later, the man was shot by police.”

The man was treated at the scene, but died from his injuries.

The woman in the motel room, who was known to the man, was not physically injured, but Deputy Commissioner Williams said she was being threatened at the time.

“The information that I have is that there was a woman in the room and she had been threatened by him and he was in possession of a firearm and he had discharged that firearm,” she said.

“The nature of the relationship will have to be subject to the investigation.”

No police officers were injured and the incident is being investigated by Major Crime.

Some of the motel guests were evacuated during the siege while others were ordered to stay in their rooms.

In a recording of the negotiations, police can be heard pleading with the man to come out of his room.

“Just listen to my voice, and obey what I am telling you to do, come out the door with nothing in your hands and you won’t be hurt, we just want to resolve this nice and safe for everybody,” the negotiator said.

Allan Bergens was a guest in another room at the time of the shooting.

He said he was told to stay put by police and had heard the gunshots.

“We just come back from tea, got into the room, sat down, put the TV on and that was it,” he said.

Motel guests were evacuated from their rooms while police negotiated with the man and nobody else was injured.

Mr Bamford said he could not answer questions about whether the officers were in danger at any point during the incident.

“All of that is going to be subject to this investigation, it’s important that we wait for that to be conducted instead of jumping to conclusions,” he said.
