A 38-year-old man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court over a fatal one-punch attack in South Brisbane.

Wayne Hearn was arrested and charged on Tuesday night after a four-day police search for the person responsible for the attack, which claimed the life of Timothy Lang.

Hearn did not apply for bail when he appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning on a charge of unlawful striking causing death.

Mr Lang, 48, died in hospital on Monday afternoon after he was punched in the head in Melbourne Street on Saturday morning.

Police said they believed the offender, a jogger, exchanged words with the victim, who fell to the ground unconscious after being hit.

On Tuesday, police said they believed the men knew each other and they had identified a suspect.

They knocked on the doors of several homes across Brisbane, calling on known associates of a Fortitude Valley man.

On Tuesday night, officers arrested Hearn at Clontarf, north of Brisbane.
