A young girl has been attacked by a kangaroo at Hervey Bay on Queensland’s Fraser Coast.

The attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon at a private house in Point Vernon, at the northern end of the coastal town.

It is understood the child, believed to be about two years old, suffered scratches to her chest and face.

Paramedics transported the girl to Hervey Bay Hospital in a stable condition.

Neighbour Renee Harris witnessed the attack and said she ran outside to try to help.

“I saw the reflection in my TV of kids and kangaroos going in all directions and I ran out and then I saw a little toddler on the ground,” she said.

“I ran around screaming at the kangaroo, then I saw the mother trying to grab the kangaroo.

“I kept running over, they ran into the garage, I was just screaming ‘close the door, close the door’.

“The kangaroo ran off around beside the house and I turned around, looked back over my shoulder and it started coming over for me.

“I’ve turned around to run and my three-year-old decided to follow me out the front door. I ran up, scooped him up and I took two steps and I’ve fallen over, landed on top of him and scraped myself up.”

She said the kangaroo ran off after her eldest ran out to see what was happening.

“I was lucky not to get attacked, but it doesn’t matter, as long as I tried to help save the little one,” she said.
