A young woman pushing a pram along a row of shops on Sydney’s north shore is fighting for her life after a car left the road, hit a pole and flipped on its side.

The accident happened just before 8.30am on Chatswood’s busy Victoria Avenue, police said.

A witness told the Seven Network the woman was “collected” by the car and “just dropped, she wasn’t moving”.

The woman, 32, was taken to Royal North Shore hospital in a critical condition suffering head injuries.

The child was uninjured but was taken to a medical centre as a precautionary measure.

The 67-year-old male driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries and will undergo mandatory blood and urine testing.

The Nine Network reported that it was believed the driver suffered a medical episode.

A witness told Nine they heard a loud noise when the incident occurred.

“We were working in the kitchen and then, ‘boom!’ We quickly came out… There was a lady who was bleeding. Lots of blood. It’s very sad,” the witness said.

Police closed Victoria Avenue in both directions between Neridah and Archer streets.
