Several teenage international students have been taken to hospital after getting into trouble in the surf off Bondi Beach, in Sydney’s east.

Police Chief Inspector Chris Stiles said the group of international students ran into difficulty just after 12:30pm.

“A large wave has come and knocked many of them over,” he said.

“An ambulance was called for two of them, who lost consciousness.”

One boy was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in a serious condition and another was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Another five children were taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Chief Inspector Stiles said the students were not doing anything to put themselves in danger.

“They were wholly within the flag area,” he said.

“It’s just one of those unfortunate incidents where a wave has come in and caught them off guard.”

Dennis Kravchenko, who was at the beach, said it was a “dramatic” situation as paramedics tried to help the students.

“It was pretty shocking, every time you see something like that it’s really bad,” he said.
