A man has died after falling off the back of a ute at the Summernats car festival in Canberra.

Police said they were called to Exhibition Park at about 4:00pm on Thursday afternoon following reports of an accident.

A 30-year-old man was taken to Canberra Hospital by ambulance, but died from his injuries on Friday afternoon.

Police are investigating the circumstances around the incident, which they said involved only one vehicle.

Soon after the man was hurt, all entrants to the festival were sent a text message from Summernats officials, banning people from riding on the back of flat tray vehicles at the event.

Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez said his thoughts were with the man’s family.

“The Summernats team offer their deepest condolences to family and friends of those involved,” a spokesman for the festival said.

Summernats is an annual event that typically attracts more than 100,000 people to Canberra.

The man was injured on the first day of this year’s festival.

Police and event organisers called for anyone who saw what happened to contact ACT Policing on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
