‘The Liberal Party should be more like One Nation’

Conservative Liberal Senator Cory Bernardi has told The Bolt Report he believes the government could lift its dismal satisfaction ratings by taking a leaf out of Pauline Hanson’s book.

Speaking on Tuesday night’s program, Senator Bernardi referred to the latest Newspoll that put the government’s primary vote at less than 40 per cent – a new low for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s government.

The Senator said the Coalition was losing votes to fringe parties such as One Nation.

“It hasn’t gone to Labor – it’s gone to others,” he said.

“And I suspect that is One Nation and others who are saying the things that I think the Liberal Party should be saying, with a little more nuance and delicacy.”

Newspoll a major blow for government

In a week that followed Mr Turnbull’s failure to broker a deal over the same sex marriage plebiscite, the Newspoll showed the Coalition trailing Labor by four points in a two-party preferred vote.

The result, which put Labor at 52 and the Coalition at 48 points, is a mirror image of voters’ two party preferred vote when Mr Turnbull came to power in 2015.

More than half of voters were dissatisfied with Mr Turnbull’s performance as PM, yet Mr Turnbull remained the preferred leader over Bill Shorten.

Mr Bernardi’s comments also followed last week’s controversial Essential Poll, which claimed half of Australians would support a ban on Muslim immigration to Australia.

The poll deemed a “lack of integration” as the main reason for Australians supporting the ban, with terrorism a secondary concern.

According to the survey, 62 per cent of the respondents agreed with this statement: “I might not agree with everything [Pauline Hanson] says, but she is speaking for ordinary Australians.”
