Not all heroes wear capes as one Brisbane man clad only in jocks has proven after helping police track down a runaway driver.

A car ploughed into a fish and chips shop at Hendra around 2am on Thursday and the driver ran from the scene.

Neighbour Daniel McConnell gave chase down the street and was able to help police track down the alleged driver, a 35-year-old man, while only wearing “me jocks”.

“I come outside in me jocks, and I seen old mate … and I said, ‘oi, what are you doing here mate, you gotta wait here,’ and he’s like, ‘na, na, I fell asleep behind the wheel,'” Mr McConnell told the Nine Network.

“He’s just started taking off, so I’ve run inside, jumped in me little purple car, and started chasing him up the street.

“He went down a side street, and I told the coppers he went down a side street, and they went and got him,” Mr McConnell said.

“And I was just chasing him in me jocks.”

“He (says to me) ‘don’t be a hero mate,’ and I said ‘I’m not trying to be a hero but the police are coming’,” Mr McConnell said.

The 35-year-old Redcliffe man allegedly crashed into the fish and chip shop on Nudgee Road, Hendra, then a member of the public directed police to nearby Williams Avenue where the man was found.

The driver has been charged with one count of unlicensed driving and is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on January 31, while his pursuer has been labelled a hero.
