It’s that time of year when, for those of us lucky enough to be on holiday, the days can merge into a blur of cake, barbecues and family catch-ups.

It’s even sometimes difficult to know whether it’s Thursday or Friday, or a public holiday.

With that in mind, TND has compiled this helpful list of New Year’s weekend trading hours for supermarkets around the country.

Hopefully it helps make managing the lazy, hazy holiday days a bit easier as we slide into 2024.

It’s important to note that many shopping centres and retailers will have special opening hours for the coming days.

When in real doubt, check the individual retailers’ website for store-specific trading details.

Woolworths

Opening hours for Woolworths supermarkets this long weekend will vary across the country.

If in doubt, check on the hours for your local shop at the Woolworths website.

Coles

Coles supermarkets are open across the country on New Year’s Day.

The lone exception is South Australia, where all metropolitan stores are closed and all regional stores are open.

However, opening and closing times may differ from normal at some supermarkets.

Check the Coles website for individual store trading hours.

Aldi

Aldi’s trading hours also vary during the holiday break, including some of its SA supermarkets being closed on New Year’s Day.

Shoppers are encouraged to visit the Aldi website for more specific details.

Major retailers

Kmart and Target are mostly open nationwide on December 31 and January 1.

There are some exceptions in Queensland and SA, while other shops have earlier closing hours than normal.

Check the individual retailer’s websites for specific trading times.

Bunnings will trade as normal on December 31 and New Year’s Day.

Liquor stores

Don’t fret if you’ve left your New Year’s Eve planning to the last minute, because there are still options.

Liquorland, First Choice and Vintage Cellars are open as normal on New Year’s Eve – though shoppers should check trading hours with individual outlets.

On New Year’s Day, most outlets are open, with the exception of some in Western Australia.

Dan Murphy’s has specific trading hours for each store on New Year’s Eve, and reducing trading hours for New Year’s Day.

The situation is similar for BWS. Check their websites for specific details.

Convenience stores

For those who are really stuck, many convenience stores will trade as normal this holiday weekend.

Many 7-Eleven stores will be open on New Year’s Day during normal trading hours.

Check the 7-Eleven website to view open hours for each store.

And most major petrol stations will also be open if you’re really stuck for petrol, or a litre of milk.
