Firefighters battled nearly five hours overnight Monday to extinguish a large blaze in an industrial estate on Sydney’s northern beaches.

A smoke warning was issued to nearby residents on Tuesday morning (AEST) as a hazardous haze blanketed the area.

Flames engulfed a tyre and mechanical workshop in Brookvale, creating thick, black smoke, Fire and Rescue NSW says.

More than 50 firefighters and 16 fire engines were sent to the blaze which broke out in a row of brick and iron factory units in Old Pittwater Rd about 6.45pm on Monday.

“Several cars have been damaged by the fire and falling debris,” Fire and Rescue NSW said in a statement.

Firefighters managed to save several other vehicles and have set up a defensive perimeter.

Local residents are urged to stay indoors and shut any windows if they are at risk of being affected by smoke.
