Man falls seven storeys during police chase

A man is in a critical condition after falling from the seventh storey of a building while running away from police in Melbourne.

Police were called to a multi-storey car park in Power Street, Southbank, after security staff noticed a man acting suspiciously at about 3am.

He fled when officers arrived but was found hanging from a railing on the outside of the building, seven storeys above the ground.

Police tried to help him but he fell before they could reach him.

He was taken to hospital in a critical condition with injuries to his chest and arms.

Homicide detectives were at the scene, but police said this was standard procedure.

Professional Standards Command was notified and is investigating the incident.
