A “Running Man” dance challenge issued by New Zealand Police has gone global, with one of the most recognisable police forces in the world responding with a dance of their own.

New Zealand Police on Tuesday posted a video of eight officers performing the Running Man on Facebook and the New York Police Department responded with their version in Brooklyn.

The New Zealand video has been viewed more than four million times, and included a challenge for police in each Australian state, the NYPD, Los Angeles Police Department and the Isles of Scilly Police – a station with an abnormally large social media following in a remote UK region.

“We catch people on the run every day, this was a new #runningmanchallenge for our team,” NZ Police wrote.

The NYPD response featured police dancing with local youths near the Brooklyn Bridge and finishes in style, with an officer “mic-dropping” his radio.

No Australian state police has created their own video, but the Queensland Police quipped: “Bet you can’t do that in jandals?”

The Isles of Scilly police all but ruled out their involvement, but wished the New Zealand Police well in their recruitment drive.

“They can draw on a supporting cast of thousands of officers and staff whereas we have a modest team of five and occasionally a cat,” they wrote.

“Our combined age on this small rock in the Atlantic (including feline years) is over 300.”

The running man dance first came to prominence in the 1980s, but has re-emerged as a social media trend in 2016.

Numerous American sports stars, including players from the Golden State Warriors, have posted videos of them performing the dance in the locker room.

This week’s effort from New Zealand Police is not the first time videos of hip-shaking officers have been a success on the internet.

In 2013, a video of NSW Police officer Yasmin London dancing in Sydney’s Martin Place gained national media coverage.
