A one-year-old girl has died in a unit fire at Queanbeyan in southern New South Wales.

Ambulance officers said a three-year-old boy was rescued from the unit and treated for smoke inhalation.

A 22-year-old woman was also rescued and treated for burns by paramedics.

The toddler and the woman have both been taken to the Canberra Hospital.

Three police officers were also treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

It is understood 20 people were evacuated from the unit complex.

Neighbour tried to kick down door

Kenny Cameron, who lives in the unit next door, attempted to help in the rescue.

“I was washing up and opened the window for fresh air and I could smell toxic smoke,” he said.

“There was black toxic smoke bellowing out from the next-door neighbour’s door.

“I tried to kick down the door and I could hear [the woman] screaming inside that she couldn’t find her little baby girl.”

Mr Cameron said he remembered the baby girl as “very happy”.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
