The husband of Sarah Palin, former US vice presidential candidate and backer of Donald Trump, has been seriously injured in a snowmobile accident in Alaska.

Todd Palin, 51, is being treated in intensive care, his wife told the crowd at a Trump rally in the state of Florida on Monday night (AEDT).

“Todd Palin was in a bad snow machine accident last night and is currently hospitalised,” the Trump campaign said in a statement, according to the New York Times.

Mr Palin is reportedly a highly skilled snowmobile racer.

The Trump campaign initially reported that Mrs Palin would leave the campaign to be by her husband’s side. She spoke briefly and unexpectedly at the Florida rally before cancelling further events, presumably to fly home to Alaska.

Mrs Palin was the former governor of Alaska, and former Republican vice presidential candidate to John McCain.

Presidential candidate Ted Cruz gave his support.

“Saddened to hear the news about Todd. Heidi and I will be keeping him and the entire Palin family in our thoughts and prayers,” Mr Cruz said on Twitter.
