A 27-year-old Sydney mother has been forced to throw her young children out of a burning second story window to save them.

The woman noticed her Lakemba apartment was on fire on Thursday evening and began yelling out her window for help, before breaking the glass and throwing her two-day-old and two-year-old to a man passing by.

Fortunately, both children were uninjured.

When fire crews arrived the woman was still sitting on the edge of her windowsill and screaming out for help.

“The lady was screaming and crying for help, help … she was just saying the word help,” one neighbour told the ABC.

Firefighters began to tackle the fire and used an extension ladder to rescue the woman from the side of the building.

The woman was taken to St George Hospital with smoke inhalation and cuts on her feet, but was otherwise in a good condition.

Another man was also taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, while about 50 others from the apartment complex were forced to evacuate.

It is believed the blaze started in a second story kitchen about 9.30pm on Thursday, and it was not being treated as suspicious by police.

A damage report will be prepared for the coroner.
