A Tasmanian fisherman has landed a swordfish weighing more than 200kg off Eaglehawk Neck in the state’s south east.

Leo Miller was fishing about 30km offshore at the continental shelf when he caught the 201.4kg fish from his boat Choonachaser.

The experienced fisherman hooked the swordfish just after 9am and took two hours and 15 minutes to haul it onboard.

“They’re renowned as the hardest fighting fish in the ocean,” he said.

“It was just a matter of inching it bit by bit towards the boat.”

The crew tried to tag and revive the fish, but decided it was best to keep the catch for food.

“It was a little bit disappointing we couldn’t revive it and let it go, but we haven’t got any in the freezer, so this will feed our friends and family for a bit,” Mr Miller said.

For the crew, landing the game fish was a huge achievement, given the meticulous preparations involved.

“[There was] the excitement and relief, and the culmination of an awful lot of work and planning,” Mr Miler said.

“You don’t just drive out to the ocean and just put a line down.

“If there’s anything wrong with your equipment, they’ll find the weak point and get away.”

Last year Mr Miller and his crew caught a 263kg swordfish was off Coles Bay.

It was believed to be the biggest caught in Australian waters by amateurs.
