Footage of a man who was just seconds away from being struck by a train has led Victoria’s regional rail operator to urge passengers to take care around railway tracks.

The man was seen jumping down onto the tracks to run across to the other platform before scrambling back as a train approaches from the opposite direction.

The man was missed by barely metres.

The incident on the Seymour line was one of 455 cases of trespassing on the V/Line network in the past year, the rail operator said.

Of those, 143 were classed as “near hits”, where train drivers had to sound their horn or put on emergency brakes.

There have been 36 near hits involving vehicles at level crossings.

A group of teens playing chicken near Pakenham, in Melbourne’s outer east, and two boys playing on the tracks at Corio, near Geelong, were also recent examples of dangerous behaviour around trains.

V/Line interim CEO Gary Liddle said the consequences could be fatal.

“The rail environment is not a playground. It’s important to be vigilant around the tracks and not do anything that can put your life at risk,” he said.

“Reports of people and vehicles on the tracks often mean we have to suspend trains in both directions, causing lengthy delays for customers.”
