It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there – even for a snake.

A Queensland snake catcher has captured the moment a small-eyed snake downed another small-eyed snake whole on the front porch of a Toowoomba home.

Dave Wiedman was called to a home in Perseverance to remove two snakes from behind a pile of boxes at the weekend.

When he arrived he discovered the two snakes were made up of a larger snake and its scaly dinner.

Mr Wiedman said while it was common for snakes to eat smaller snakes in the wild, it was rare to capture the cannibal moment on video.

“I’ve only ever seen this twice before and last time it was a red-bellied black snake that, once I touched the snake it was eating, he let go and regurgitate his food and started to defend himself,” he said.

“This one didn’t care, he just kept on going.

“He wasn’t fussed about us recording the whole thing, it was pretty amazing.

“That would be about a week’s worth of food for that snake.”

The small-eyed snake is venomous, however, the snakes are immune to their own venom, so the smaller snake was alive for most of the ordeal.

The owners had just recently moved into their new home and Mr Wiedman said it was certainly a shock when they discovered the snake wars happening on their front porch.

“Once the snake was finished I bagged him up and released him into the bush,” he said.

The Australian Museum states the small-eyed snake is a “secretive night-dweller” that can grow to an average size of 50 centimetres.

The snake – which is an active night forager – usually feeds on things such as lizard eggs, skinks and sometimes other smaller snakes.
