When crews arrived the roof was fully engulfed, and it took 30 firefighters to get the blaze under control, the MFB said.

They said eight residents were moved as a precaution, but the fire was put out in an hour.

It is the third attack on a Kittens venue in recent months, with its South Melbourne premises the target of drive-by shootings in November and January.

According to Fairfax Media, people were seen acting suspiciously around the venue in the moments before the suspected attack.

Local resident Tejvir Singh said he was at home when he heard a blast.

“Actually we are just living nearby Kittens and I’m in the toilet at that time, and I’m just hearing a sound like of explosion,” he said.

“I heard two people talking with each other, maybe at Kittens or at the back, and after that there is a really, very big explosion.

“The flames were really, really huge.”

No-one was injured in the incident, the MFB said. it took just over an hour to control the blaze.
