Today show host Karl Stefanovic has turned his surprise appearance in an IS propaganda video into a promotional opportunity for his popular television show.

A video released overnight by Islamic State – also known by the acronym ISIL – uses Nine Network footage of the 41-year-old television personality in their bid to advertise for new recruits and encourage existing followers to immigrate.

The 12-minute clip, released via an Islamic State channel on the encrypted communication service Telegram, begins with scenes of heavily armed police and armoured vehicles mobilising as the deadly December 2015 attack in in San Bernardino, California unfolds.

The video, titled “So we will give him a good life”, then cuts to Stefanovic as he was recording a piece live to camera from outside Le Carillion bar, where more than a dozen people were killed in November’s deadly Paris shootings.

A narrator then praises the attacks in the French capital and San Bernardino.

Stefanovic responded to his included in the video on Thursday, encouraging “all you ISIL bastards” to tune into the Today show for freebies and fun.
