Panda takes tumble in Washington snow storm: video

At least one Washington resident wasn’t disappointed to wake up to snow blanketing the city.

Washington has received about 50 centimetres of snow since a deadly blizzard hit the US, lashing country’s north-east states and killing at least 15 people.

The National Zoo shared an adorable video of giant panda Tian Tian revelling in the newly fallen snow, rolling around and throwing it up in the air.

“Giant pandas have thick, woolly fur coats, perfect for keeping them warm,” the zoo tweeted.

The video has been viewed 33 million times on Facebook and received almost 140,000 retweets on Twitter.

Tian Tian, an 18-year-old male, is a giant panda and was born at the China Research and Conservation Centre in Wolong, Sichuan Province, the zoo’s website says.

He weighs about 120kg and his name means “more and more”.

The zoo closed on Saturday, with just a few staff remaining on site to care for the animals.

Tian Tian was not the only one to enjoy the frosty weather; zoo staff shared photos of their other animals enjoying the snow.

Keepers even brought a bucket of snow inside for the red-tailed monkeys, which had to be kept inside for their safety.
