A couple on Queensland’s Fraser Coast has claimed $70 million in last night’s Powerball draw, which is equal to the largest lottery win in Australia’s history.

The registered Powerball players, grandparents from Hervey Bay, won the entire division-one prize.

“The best thing we’ve ever won is the old chook raffle,” the woman said in a statement released by Tatts Lotteries.

She had told her husband that this year she had decided to win Lotto.

“It was my resolution to bring more positivity into my life,” she said.

The couple, who wished to remain anonymous, said they will be helping their family and giving to some charities before spending on themselves.

“We haven’t done much travel in our lives, but now we’re off,” he said.

“There’s also a dream car on the horizon which was always out of reach until now.”

The winning numbers were on a six-game ticket, purchased at a newsagency in Pialba.

Newsagent thrilled at customers’ win

Allan Wickham, who sold the winning ticket at a Pialba newsagency said it was “unreal”.

“I’ve had goosebumps all morning just thinking about such a large ticket,” he said.

“This week leading up to it I thought ‘I think we’re due for a reasonable size win’ – $70 million I wasn’t expecting that.

“The $70 million has really, really given us bragging rights over a lot of other newsagents.

“We sold our first division-one winning ticket a few years ago, so this win was long overdue.

“What a way to break the drought, with a $70 million win.”

Elissa Lewis from Tatts Lotteries said the lucky couple had gone down in the game’s history, as the largest win on a single Powerball ticket.

Ms Lewis said the odds of winning on a six-game entry were “one in just over 12 million”.

“In two weeks from today our winning couple will have a bank balance that has multiple zeros at the end of it,” she said.

“The standing record for the largest Powerball win claimed by a single entry in Australia was set in 2008 when one ticket purchased in Melbourne won $58.7 million.

“It has also equalled the largest Lotto win ever by a single ticket which was set in December 2013 when a ticket purchased by a group of friends on the Gold Coast won $70 million in Oz Lotto.”

The women met regularly for lunch and used the money left over after paying their bill to buy a shared lottery ticket.

Ms Lewis said the couple were planning to travel, get a new car, and donate some of their winnings to charity.

“They’ve also travelled a little bit overseas, but now that they have this $70 million travel stash of cash they’re going to take off,” she said.

“They’re going to head to the US and Europe.

“Also they’re going to give some to the charities that are close to their hearts.”
