A mother has drowned at a beach at Somerset on Tasmania’s north-west coast while swimming with her two daughters.

Surf lifesavers raised the alarm for three people who were in trouble in the water at Somerset Beach shortly before 6:00pm on Thursday.

Police said bystanders dragged the 49-year-old Somerset woman from the ocean and performed CPR.

She was taken to the North-West Regional Hospital at Burnie in a critical condition and later died.

Her daughters, aged nine and 10, were also rescued from the water but police said they were safe and well.

They were comforted at the Somerset Surf Club before being taken to hospital.

They are described as being in a satisfactory condition.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
