A 65-year-old Australian man has been killed during a snowmobile accident in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

The man lost control of the snowmobile during a tour as he descended Blackcomb Mountain and crashed into a tree about 11pm on January 1, a Canadian Wilderness Adventures spokesman told AAP.

Tour staff and a nursing student provided first aid, but he died at the scene.

His 54-year-old female passenger, also Australian, was taken to Lions Gate Hospital in Vancouver.

“Canadian Wilderness Adventures wishes to express its sincerest condolences to the family and friends for the sad loss,” the CWA spokesman said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it is providing consular assistance to the man’s family.
