A man has died in hospital after a stabbing in Melbourne that preceded a violent siege which police ended by shooting a man, Victorian police say.

The victim, a 45-year-old Seaford man, was stabbed at two locations in Seaford about 10am on Monday.

He was taken to The Alfred hospital, where he died on Tuesday afternoon.

A man police wanted to question over the attack was shot twice by police and critically injured as they ended a siege that lasted almost 14 hours in nearby Frankston early Tuesday.

Heavily armed police entered the house about 7.20am because the man began stabbing one of three women he had threatened to kill during the stand-off.

Police insist they saved the woman’s life when they fired on the man, who was armed with knives and who they had been negotiating with through the night.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill says they first hoped the siege could be resolved peacefully.

But the man became increasingly irrational overnight, threatening to kill the three women and a man who were inside.

“My understanding is that the ice that he may or may not have used yesterday was starting to wear off and his behaviour deteriorated,” Mr Hill told reporters.

Then the man stabbed one of the women and police opened fire, striking the 46-year-old, and ending the siege.

“He stabbed her in the leg, he commenced to, we believe, go down a path where he was going to take her life. So we intervened and we saved her life,” Mr Hill said.

Minutes later the bloodied Frankston man was wheeled out on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance while the woman who he stabbed in the leg was also brought out and taken to hospital.

The Frankston man remains in Alfred Hospital in a critical but stable condition, while the 37-year-old Frankston woman is stable in the Frankston Hospital.

The man also assaulted a second woman in the house.

“She has been slashed on the hand and also suffered a blow to the head, a punch, from the offender,” Mr Hill said.

She is one of two other women, aged 44 and 32, and a man aged 65, from Frankston, who were also in the house and are speaking with police about what happened.

The man shot by police is under police guard in The Alfred hospital.

Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation.
