As about 30,000 school leavers prepare to descend on Surfers Paradise, police have made a major drug bust on the Gold Coast.

Ecstasy pills and liquid fantasy were seized in the arrest, which occurred near the Surfers Paradise entertainment precinct on Thursday.

Police allege the quantities of drug meant they were for supply or distribution purposes.

Surfers Paradise Police Station officer in charge Senior Sergeant James Munckton said the arrest highlighted some of the dangers poised during schoolies celebrations.

“The timing of the arrest was perfect for ensuring the personal safety of all community members and in particular school leavers attending schoolies 2015,” Sgt Munckton said.

The Gold Coast Bulletin reports a national organisation for body corporates and building managers has issued a warning on the dangers from the phenomenon known as “rooftopping”.

The social media craze involves taking a selfie from a rooftop or balcony.

Beachcomber Resort manager Greg Kafritsas says after tragedies and near misses in the past, his building took a zero-tolerance approach when it came to schoolies and skylarking on balconies.

“When they arrive we will give them all a talk and directions,” Mr Kafritsas told the Bulletin.

“Any misbehaviour on the balconies … and they will be evicted.”

The annual schoolies celebrations begin on Friday and continue until December 5.
