Malcolm Turnbull has urged the G20 to look to the future, rather than dwell on the global financial crisis.

The prime minister jets off from Canberra on Thursday morning for a 10-day overseas trip taking in Indonesia, Germany, Turkey, the Philippines and Malaysia.

The main meeting of the trip will be the Group of 20 leaders summit in the Turkish coastal city of Antalya, coming a year after Brisbane hosted it.

Mr Turnbull says the focus of the summit needs to be on strong, sustainable and balanced growth and job creation.

“We need to maintain the G20’s attention on promoting future growth through innovation, structural reform and infrastructure, rather than simply looking backwards at the global financial crisis,” he says.

On the agenda will be improving trade and financial regulation, dealing with base erosion and profit shifting and promoting infrastructure investment.

Action will also be taken on shoring up banks considered too big to fail.

Climate, refugees and countering violent extremism will be on the agenda for a series of bilateral meetings on the summit sidelines.

The first stop will be Jakarta, where Mr Turnbull will meet with President Joko Widodo.

In Berlin, the prime minister will discuss ways to improve economic and diplomatic ties with Germany with Chancellor Angela Merkel.

After the G20 summit, Mr Turnbull heads to the Philippines for the APEC leaders meeting and Kuala Lumpur for the East Asia Summit.
