Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has met with Prince Charles in Canberra.

Mr Turnbull, an avowed republican, hosted His Royal Highness and wounded veterans and their families at Government House on Wednesday.

Meanwhile the Prince of Wales’ wife, Camilla, was taken around the grounds of the Yarralumla residence by Governor-General Peter Cosgrove’s wife for some kangaroo spotting.

Charles later met with federal Labor leader Bill Shorten at the governor-general’s official residence.

They discussed a number of topics including climate change and the national disability insurance scheme.

At the conclusion of their meeting, Mr Shorten made clear his support for an Australian republic but said he looked forward to welcoming him back to Australia as king of England.

The meeting capped off a busy day in the national capital for the royal couple, who arrived just after 10am.

They attended the national Remembrance Day ceremony at the Australian War Memorial and shared visits to the National Arboretum, National Museum and a truffle farm.
