Bill Shorten has risen one point as preferred prime minister, but he remains far behind Malcolm Turnbull in the popularity stakes, according to the latest Newspoll.

Public opinion on the best prime minister for Australia saw Mr Turnbull’s drop 2 per cent to 61 per cent, and a gain for Mr Shorten – up 1 per cent from his record low of 17 per cent.

The Coalition gained 1 per cent in the two-party-preferred to 53 per cent, putting them ahead by 6 percentage points to the ALP.

The numbers were a return to levels not seen since the 2013 election, and came despite increased debate around tax reform.

The Turnbull Government recently attempted to warm public opinion around tax reform, while the ALP launched a campaign demanding the Coalition to release more information on their proposed changes.

The government’s primary vote has climbed one point to 46 per cent in the past fortnight, up seven points since the leadership change.

Labor’s core support fell one point to 34 per cent, a tumble of five points since Mr Turnbull ousted Tony Abbott for the prime ministership.

The Greens also fell one point to 10 per cent while support for other parties and independents gained one point to 10 per cent.

According to News Corp, changes to superannuation could be at the top of Turnbull’s reform check list.

The report claimed Industry Minister Christopher Pyne told Coalition MPs the government would not take an increase to the GST to the next election.

But Treasurer Scott Morrison told ABC radio on Tuesday morning Mr Pyne had “denied those reports”.
