One man has been killed while another was taken to hospital after a trolley they were travelling in down a suburban Sydney street collided with a car.

Police said about 12.20am on Tuesday morning two 28-year-old men, both originally from Sweden, were riding in a shopping trolley along Coogee Bay Road, in Randwick in Sydney’s southeast.

They were thrown from the trolley when it collided with a moving car, driven by a 45-year-old man, at the intersection with Judge Street and suffered critical injuries.

One man died at the scene, while the other was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with serious injuries. The New Daily has contacted the hospital to confirm the man’s condition.

The 45-year-old driver was not injured in the crash, but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

A NSW Police spokesperson told The New Daily one of the men had recently moved to Australia from Sweden, while the other had lived in the country for some time. They could not confirm reports the pair had been travelling up to 80km/h when the collision occurred.

Detective Superintendent Gavin Dengate, from the Eastern Beaches command, told the ABC it appeared the men were simply “mucking around” before the crash, and the driver of the car was not at fault.

“We’re conducting inquiries into a number of areas but that’s certainly one theory, but certainly not the only theory that we’re looking at,” Detective Superintendent Dengate said.

“I suppose we all know, because we’ve all used shopping trolleys, how dangerous they are, how you can’t manoeuvre a shopping trolley.

“It must be one of the most dangerous things you can do.”

Investigations are ongoing.
