Wild storms expected to sweep through Sydney

A severe weather warning for Sydney has been cancelled, but storm clouds have provided the city with some incredible views.

Severe thunderstorms have been downgraded by the NSW Bureau of Meteorology, which said Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong or surrounding areas were no longer affected.

The New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES) said there had been no significant reports of damage, but they had received 44 requests for assistance along the coast.

They said there was still storm activity in the north of the state.

The bureau issued a severe storm warning for residents in the parts of the mid north coast, the Hunter and the Northern Tablelands.

They have been warned to be wary for large hailstones, heavy rainfall and damaging winds.

Meanwhile, Sydneysiders have watched a large shelf cloud descend across the city from the eastern beaches.

The SES advised people to secure loose items around their property and to move cars away from trees.

The public have been warned to keep clear of fallen power lines, storm drains and flood water during the storm.
