Assistant Commissioner Rick Nugent said on Saturday the men were sighted near St James on Thursday with police now sure they were driving a vehicle which rammed one of their cars.
It was the same Toyota LandCruiser Gino, 58, and Mark 35, had stolen in the NSW town of Holbrook on Sunday or Monday although it’s number plates had been switched.
It is believed decals have been added to the vehicle to disguise it.
Mr Nugent also confirmed the men were seen in Bairnsdale, more than five hours away from St James, on Wednesday morning.
“We know they try and hide for a few days to let the police move on – so we don’t know exactly where they are but we do still believe they are in this area,” he told the Nine Network.
“They are violent criminals.”
Police have moved their incident control set-up from Yea to Wangaratta but will maintain a command post in Yea.
Members of the public are urged to report any sighting but not to approach the men, who are armed and dangerous.
The men from Queensland had avoided police for several years. They are wanted on a string of charges in New South Wales and Queensland.
Yesterday, police said the pair no longer have long hair and beards.
Police had been urging people to report any sighting of a Toyota Landcruiser with a white bull bar and white rims, with NSW registration plates BV70WP.
