Volkswagen and Audi have suspended Australian sales of some of their most popular vehicles as a result of the ‘Dieselgate’ emission scandal.

According to motoring.com.au, VW’s turbo-diesel Jetta, Passat CC, Passat B7, Tiguan and Caddy are affected.

Volkswagen, in a brief statement, says sales of “vehicles fitted with 1.6 or 2.0-litre EA189 diesel engines” had been “temporarily” stopped.

The statement in its entirety is below.

“Volkswagen Group Australia (VGA) met with the relevant government authorities yesterday to advise them of its strategy in Australia to address concerns that have been raised around the world regarding the diesel emissions issue.

“In its first step, effective immediately VGA has temporarily suspended the sale of affected vehicles fitted with 1.6 or 2.0-litre EA189 diesel engines. The suspension will remain until the emission issues are addressed in those vehicles.

“VGA will make further announcements next week.”

VGA’s list of the vehicles includes passenger cars and one commercial vehicle, plus two Skoda models. The vehicles are:

Volkswagen
Jetta, Passat CC, Passat B7 and Tiguan

Volkswagen Commercial
Caddy

Skoda
Yeti and Superb.

motoring.com.au has asked for further clarification, however, VGA has indicated it holds around 1000 of the vehicles (combined) in stock at this point.

Audi Australia has followed VGA’s lead and suspended new car sales on 2.0 TDI-engined A4, A5 and Q5 variants.

In a similarly worded statement, the company stated that it too would make further statements this coming week. Further, it confirmed EU6 certified engines and V6 and V8 turbo-diesels irrespective of their emissions certifications are unaffected. It also stated “the affected vehicles continue to be safe to drive”.
