Cabinet Minister Andrew Robb has spoken live on air about an impending Federal election which he implied could be months away.

The Trade Minister was speaking from Indonesia, and missed Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s first Cabinet meeting on Monday.

Mr Robb was responding to a question about Tuesday morning’s Newspoll, showing a five-point jump by the Coalition over the Opposition.

“We’ve got just a few months before the very important election,” Mr Robb said.

Since Mr Turnbull rolled former PM Tony Abbott in a Liberal Party leadership spill, 54 votes to 44, last Monday, the polls have been in his favour.

The latest Newspoll, conducted for The Australian and published on Tuesday, revealed the Coalition now had an election-winning lead over Labor, 51 per cent to 49 per cent, after preferences  – making it the government’s best result since April 2014.

Poll voters also backed Mr Turnbull as Australia’s most popular Prime Minister in more than five years, since taking over the role.

The poll showed that 55 per cent of voters rated Mr Turnbull as the preferred PM, giving him a 34-point lead over Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, on 21 per cent.
