A Chinese woman has lost all nose function after her estranged husband severed it from her face with his teeth.

The entire nose – including the nose tip, soft triangle and nasal septum – was bitten off in the attack and swallowed whole.

• Young women are suffering a mental health crisis

The attack allegedly occurred after the woman, identified only as Ms Yang, recently failed to answer a 2am phone call from her husband, People’s Daily Online reported.

The man allegedly stormed Ms Yang’s workplace, in China’s Shandong province, the next morning and pinned her against the wall, before detaching the nose.

“He said: “Why didn’t you pick up the phone when I rang you?” Ms Yang told a Shandong news broadcaster, according to Daily Mail Australia.

“And the next thing I knew, he pushed my head towards the wall and ate my nose in one go.”

She said her husband had become dominant after the birth of their first child.

Initially marrying as divorcees, the man demanded the newborn child be sold so Ms Yang could look after his grandchildren.

This forced their separation, but Ms Yang said he still contacted her often.

She must wait three months before a new nose can be constructed.

The estranged husband is still at large.
