MP eats cannabis for breakfast

The same MP who sucked on an e-cigarette in Parliament has admitted to eating “cannabis for breakfast”.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Jeremy Buckingham is a member of the Greens Party.

But the cannabis he referred to was not marijuana, but hemp seeds, which he presumably used to jazz up an otherwise run-of-the-mill breakfast cereal.

The bizarre admission was an attempt to impress upon the parliament the laws which are preventing a potentially lucrative market from operating in New South Wales.

Unfortunately, Mr Buckingham’s point was slightly diluted when Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair mistook the word “cannabis” for “camus”.

According to Food Standards Australia and New Zealand, hemp is a source of protein, vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids.

LowTHC hemp can be grown in NSW under licence, but it is used for its fibres and oil, not for food.

Mr Buckingham, the Greens agriculture spokesman, has campaigned for farmers to be allowed to sell hemp seed for human consumption, to make the crop more viable.

In May, the MP lit up an e-cigarette in Parliament to prove a point about legal loopholes around the vapour devices.

He said e-cigarettes should be dealt with under the same laws covering tobacco and nicotine, including banning their use in non-smoking areas.
