A policeman has been hit by a ute after the driver reversed into an ambulance and police car, before ploughing into the officer and driving off in Melbourne’s south-east.

Emergency services were called to a fast food outlet on the intersection of Warrigal and Kingston Roads at Heatherton just before 12:30am, responding to reports a driver was slumped over the wheel of the vehicle.

Police said when the officer alerted the driver they were there, the man reversed and crashed into the cars, before driving forward and over the officer.

The dark-coloured dual cab Ford Ranger, which had no number plates, then drove off.

The policeman was taken to the Alfred Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
