The teenager accused of killing Queensland teenager Jayde Kendall has been remanded in custody.

Brenden Jacob Bennetts, 18, was charged with one count of murder and one count of misconduct with a corpse by interfering.

Bennetts’ lawyer, Brendan Ryan, told reporters outside the Brisbane Magistrates’ Court on Friday his client would plead not guilty.

“Unfortunately as of yesterday, we all discovered that young Jayde Kendall had passed away,” he said.

“I know that there will be a lot of speculation (but) there is always a defence case, and there is certainly a defence case to be made in this particular matter.”

The charges were laid following the discovery of Ms Kendall’s body at Upper Tenthill, near Mount Sylvia and Allens Road, 14 kilometres south of Gatton on Thursday.

Mr Ryan described the pair as being of “limited acquaintanceship”.

Ms Kendall was reported missing nearly a fortnight ago, allegedly disappearing after Bennetts picked her up from school.

He was remanded in custody until September 4.

Meanwhile, school friends have established a memorial for Ms Kendall at Lockyer District State High School.

Students consoled one another, and the school community was deeply saddened and shocked, Education Queensland regional director Greg Dickman said.

“She was a popular, well-liked student who will be greatly missed by all her friends and teachers,” he said.

“Support is being provided to students and staff, and guidance counsellors will remain at the school to provide support in any way they can and for as long as it is needed.”

A Facebook page set up during the long search for Jayde – last seen getting into Bennetts’ car outside her school – urged Gatton residents to wear purple in her honour.

“Jayde impacted on the lives of all those who knew her because of her generous nature and kind soul,” a post on the Help Find Jayde page read.
