An armed gunman has been arrested after he allegedly killed two people and wounded two others in Louisiana on Wednesday afternoon (local time).

Police allege the offender shot a police officer and stabbed two others just blocks from the mini-mart where he was arrested, The Advocate reported.

Police said they were called to the scene of the stabbing about 3pm and the responding officer was shot.

The offender fled the scene, allegedly crashing his car into the store and barricading himself and others inside in the small town of Sunset, Louisiana.

Tear gas was used in the arrest of the offender, which took place about 6pm (local time), St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz told The Advocate.

He described the arrest as “hell in a handbasket” and said about 50 local, parish and state officers responded.

“Three people were in the store when the suspect came in and all safely escaped,” Guidroz said in the article.

“The suspect was taken to a Lafayette hospital for treatment of possible gas burns.

“The man, who had not been identified by authorities as of 8pm Wednesday, will be booked into St. Landry Parish jail upon his release.”

Police allege drugs are involved.

“When people ingest illegal drugs, they get brave, they get stupid,” Guidroz told NBC News.

The officer was airlifted to hospital, but the condition of the other victims, and motivations behind the alleged crime, were unknown.

“Come out with your hands up to the sound of our voice so I can talk to you. Come out of that room,” police said via megaphone, an on-scene journalist reported.

In June, another gunman killed three and injured seven in a Louisiana cinema before killing himself.
